Mayor's Office
January 2025
Dear Fellow Washingtonians,
As we step into 2025, it is with immense pride and excitement that I announce the bicentennial celebration of our beloved city. Two hundred years ago, our community was founded by William Holland, a man whose hard work, vision, generosity and determination laid the foundation for what has grown into the vibrant, thriving community that we know today.
Over the course of two centuries, our city has experienced both great triumphs and challenges. One of the most defining moments in recent history was the devastating tornado that struck our community in 2013. Yet, in the face of devastation, Washington demonstrated the resilience that has always defined us. Through the support and determination of our citizens, our city recovered, rebuilt, and emerged stronger. This is a testament to the spirit that has carried us through our 200 years.
As we celebrate our bicentennial, it is a time to reflect on our growth and progress; from a small, rural settlement to a prospering community of nearly 17,000 residents, where our businesses, schools, parks, and neighborhoods continue to flourish. Our rich history is reflected in the small-town charm and strong bonds that remain at the heart of Washington. We are a city that values our past and looks forward to our future.
This year, we will honor the legacy of our founder, our resilience through adversity, and the bright future that lies ahead. I invite you to join in the celebrations — to take pride in the history we share and the community we continue to build. Washington has always been a city defined by its people, and together, we will make our bicentennial year one to remember.
Sincerely,
Gary W. Manier, Mayor
Washington, Illinois
