Our Past

History of Washington:

Established in 1825, Washington has a rapidly growing population of over 16,000 persons. We are proud of our reputation as a vibrant community offering a high quality of life supported by excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, diverse parks and recreation offerings and a resident population motivated by community involvement and volunteerism.

Our traditions include our historic downtown square, offering distinctive shops and cafes along with a one-third acre park and water fountain, many service-oriented businesses, and family-friendly amenities. The City of Washington supports all those involved with making Washington a wonderful community for residents of all ages to live and grow.

Who We Are:

As a local government agency, the City serves the citizens of Washington. We do that through the effective implementation of various departments, such as Finance, Planning and Development, Public Safety, Engineering, and Public Works. We strive to promote and build a community that serves as a foundation for a high quality of life and small-town charm.

To do that, the City of Washington employs roughly 70 highly qualified individuals, many of whom have served the City for 10-25 years. We work hard, we care for each other, we embrace change and find joy in serving the community of Washington.
