Boards and Commissions
PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSIONThe primary responsibility of the Planning & Zoning Commission is to make recommendations to the City Council on matters pertaining to the City’s long range comprehensive land use plan. It serves as a hearing body on re-zoning petitions and on petitions for the granting of Special Use permits. It also makes recommendations to the City Council on the approval of subdivisions of land. Another primary duty is to hear petitions or appeals to the application of the terms of the City's Zoning Code. The Commission has limited authority to grant variations to the provisions of the Zoning Code, only when the property owner can demonstrate that the Zoning Code imposes practical difficulties or particular hardship not created by the property owner. This Commission consists of seven (7) members who reside either within the City limits or within a one and one-half mile radius of the City. Members are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. They serve a term of five years or until their successors are duly appointed. Planning & Zoning Commission meetings are held at the Library meeting room at Five Points Washington on the first Wednesday of each month, beginning at 6:30 P.M.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSIONThe purpose of the Historic Preservation Commission is to promote the protection, enhancement, perpetuation, and use of improvements of special character or historic interest or value in the interest of the health, safety, and welfare of the city's residents. This Commission consists of seven (7) members who reside within the city. Members are appointed by the Mayor with consent of the City Council. Meetings are held in the conference room at City Hall on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. as needed.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION (EDC)The EDC is responsible for retaining and expanding existing business and industry and to attract new business to our community that is appropriate for our area, meeting on a quarterly basis.

BUILDING BOARD OF REVIEWThe Building Board of Review reviews and recommends to the City Council amendments to the Building Codes and hears appeals of decisions made by the City’s Building Official on interpretations of the Building Code. The Building Board of Review is comprised of five (5) members who are professionals in the building trades appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The Building Board of Review meets as needed.

BOARD OF POLICE COMMISSIONERSThis Board is charged with the duty to appoint, promote, discipline, and remove all sworn officers of the Police Department in accordance with State statute, with the exception of the Police Chief. It consists of three (3) residents of the City who are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Members serve a term of three years and until their successors are appointed.

POLICE PENSION BOARDState statute provides the powers and duties of this Board which is responsible for controlling and managing the Police Pension Fund. The Police Pension Fund is established and administered for the benefit of its police officers and for the benefit of their widows, children, and certain other dependents. The Police Pension Board is composed of five (5) members, two of whom are appointed by the Mayor, two from the regular police force elected by the active members of the police force, and the fifth elected by and from the beneficiaries of the Police Pension Fund. The Police Pension Board meets quarterly.

BOARD OF MANAGERS OF GLENDALE CEMETERYState statute provides that the Cemetery Board authorize perpetual trust for the repair, maintenance, upkeep, and ornamentation of the cemetery. The Board meets at least once annually and as needed. The Glendale Cemetery Board consists of three (3) residents of the City who are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Members serve a term of three years and until their successors are appointed.
